Serre Chevalier Ski Resort & Transfer Guide

Serre Chevalier, which is also called the "Big Serre-Che", is one of the largest French ski resorts and the biggest in the Southern Alps. It occupies the Guisan Valley from Briancon to Montier les Bains and offers 250 km of excellent trails of different levels. Due to its favourable location in the vicinity of the Ecrins National Park and close to the Italian border, Serre Chevalier is an ideal holiday destination both in summer and in winter for the French and the Italians.

Serre Chevalier Valle differs from most other things in that it is not built from scratch, a specially designed resort for winter recreation. There already existed settlements, notable in the history of France, and also became known as places of rest 150 years ago.

From a historical point of view, this region today is a notable cultural centre, primarily due to the historical heritage of Briancon. This small town is located at an altitude of 1350 meters above sea level, and some of its urban fortifications are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In this regard, Serre Chevalier is markedly different from other winter resorts, and not only French ones. Briancon even was chosen for permanent residence by many celebrity people in France. In addition to the famous Vauban fortress, you can visit churches with frescoes from the 15th century and see other sights.

Ski Resort Location

Located in the department of the Upper Alpes, the Serre-Chevalier ski centre is considered one of the southernmost resorts in the Alps and the fifth largest ski area in France.

Like many other alpine resorts of the country, Serre-Chevalier is a vast (more than 250 sq. Km.) Slope area that stretches for 6 km along the Guisane river valley between Le Bez and Villeneuve, in 3-9 km north-west of the city of Briancon and 15 km from the Italian border.

Serre Chevalier was established in 1941 with the construction of a cable car to the summit of Chantemerl Serra-Chevalier (2483m). The Serre Chevalier ski station is situated on the border of the Ecrins National Park founded in 1973. This resort is really huge. It unites three communes, which in turn include thirteen villages.

The total length of the trails is also impressive - 250 kilometres. As it was previously mentioned,  this is one of the southernmost alpine resorts, but, thanks to the heights and proximity of the sea, the snow cover here is stable throughout the winter season.

The ski area covers four separate tourist areas, which in 2011 merged to create a single brand - "Serre Chevalier Valley" (Briancon, Serre Chevalier – Chantemerle, Serre Chevalier-Villeneuve and Serre Chevalier- Le Monetier-les-Bains).  Each of the four towns has its own open-air ice rink, bars and restaurants, jazz clubs, cinemas, shops, supermarkets and all kinds of pools with thermal water, Turkish baths and other delights of civilization.
