Route Details, Issues & Alternatives

The standard route from Chambery to Val Thorens 3 Valleys (122km) will usually take you via Route de l'Aéroport heading towards D1201 (Voglans), than continuing towards Salins-les-Thermes and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville.

A second option is a route which is 45km longer (147km), you should use it if a standard route is closed due to weather conditions or there are other reasons why it can’t be used. You should use the same route via Route de l'Aéroport heading towards D1201 (Voglans), continue on D911, D912, D1508, D1212 towards Grande Rue (Saint-Martin-de-Belleville). Continue along the Grande Rue to you're your end destination.

 

What to Do En-Route

You don’t have to go straight to your ski destination. If you’d like to stop at any stage to stretch your legs, we will happily accommodate this.

There are many supermarkets en-route to Val Thorens 3 Valleys. If you are feeling hungry on your way to the resort, you can choose a few snacks for the journey. You may find products bought on the way to Val Thorens 3 Valleys are cheaper than those found in the resort itself. Maybe that is better to get your travel essentials before your arrival to your destination.

Journey Altitude

It’s important to know that your journey from Chambery airport to Val Thorens 3 Valleys will take you to a very high altitude. This presents its own potential complications.

Chambery airport sits at around 235m, while the main village of Val Thorens is at 2300m. Some passengers can experience discomfort, such as nausea, headaches and dizziness can be symptoms of the change in air pressure. Young children are often those at risk to feel unwell.

When you combine such air pressure change with steep, serpentine roads, the journey can be difficult for some people. If needed, ask your driver to lower the temperature in the vehicle to help you feel more comfortable.
