The Resort

La Plagne resort benefits from being part of the Paradiski area, with a variety of pistes covering a huge skiable area and providing something of interest for all levels of skier and snowboarder. The Paradiski playground comprises of 3 resorts: la Plagne, Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry. The Vanoise Express cable car, which was built to connect Les Arcs and La Plagne, forms a continuous and expansive ski area: the Paradiski area.

Made up of eleven different villages, La Plagne’s huge variety in atmosphere and amenities offers a holiday base to suit every taste and budget.

Plagne Centre is the main resort area and features all the shops, restaurants and bars you expect from a major French ski resort. La Plagne 1800 offers a quieter and more scenic spot for tourist with its chalet-style buildings and ski-in, ski-out accomodation. Completely car-free, the idyllic Belle Plagne is the perfect place for recharging your batteries and enjoying mountain life. Plagne Soleil is a great base camp for discovering Paradiski’s 425 km of runs with its central location. Champagny en Vanoise is a charming mountain village bursting with energy, located in the heart of the mountains at the gateway to the Vanoise National Park, its south-facing slopes ensure sunshine all year round.

The relaxed atmosphere of Plagne Villages make it a great place for families to stay. And if it’s apres-ski you’re after, then Montalbert might be a good choice. The small, intimate village has a definite buzz around the cafés and restaurants.

Otherwise, stick to the higher altitude resorts where there are the few venues which stay open until 4am.

Skiing in La Plagne

Part of the Paradiski ski area, La Plagne and its neghbouring resorts of Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry, boast over 425 km of ski runs. La Plagne itself offers 132 pistes with 9 gentle greens, 70 challenging blues, 34 steep reds and 8 demanding black runs, connected by a network of 74 ski lifts. Its summit elevation reaches a dizzying 3 250m and the resort has a vertical drop of 2000m.

The resort also offers expansive opportunities for off-piste adventures. The best off-piste areas include Bellecôte, Inversens, and the Chiaupe glacier, offering various exciting trails with diverse, challenging terrain.

Make your plans by taking full advantage of the ski map of La Plagne- decide on your runs and where you’ll stop for hot chocolate and crepes. During the winter, the map gives real time opening and closing times for the lifts and runs.

Things to do in La Plagne

There is plenty to keep you amused if you fancy a break from skiing.

A not-to-be-missed experience is the Olympic Bobsleigh run. It’s truly a once in a lifetime experience. Ride solo in the Speed Luge, in a group of four in the Bob Raft or in a full competition bobsleigh complete with professional driver. 

For something a little different, have a go at Superluge with Oxygene! An hour and a half and 450 metres of vertical descent with state of the art sledges you are promised an awesome experience.

Visit the ice grotto, located at the top of the Plagne Bellecôte glacier at 3,417m. The colours inside range from blue to green, a truly beautiful sight and one not to miss.

To experience a different perspective on the winter landscape, try husky dog sledding, ride a skidoo, horse drawn sleigh or get away from it all on some snowshoes. Or for a unique experience, strap on your crampons and go hiking on one of the many nearby glaciers. 

Go ice skating at the floodlit rink at Bellecôte, indulge in spa treatments or take a dip in one of the several swimming pools, even go bowling.

La Plagne is part of the Paradiski ski area, one of the largest in Europe and the second biggest linked ski area in the world. Although it has a reputation for being an easy-skiing resort, many experts soon discover how much challenging off-piste terrain there is on the mountain. Most of it is on the northern and southern flanks of the Live 3000 high altitude area and summit and must be skied with a guide.

The best time to ski La Plagne depends on the weather and snow conditions, but generally, you can ski from December to April using the lift system. Early December is a good time for fresh snow, while January and February are usually a safe bet for snowfall and good quality snow.

La Plagne is perfect for beginners, offering a variety of beginner areas and ski-in/ski-out access. Learn to ski and develop quickly into an intermediate skier and beyond in any of the six altitude villages. The resort features several violet-coded runs designed for absolute beginners, complemented by free mini ski lifts to make your skiing experience enjoyable and hassle-free. 

Even though La Plagne has a reputation for being a slightly easier resort in terms of piste riding, there is plenty to keep an advanced skier occupied, with the best area for advanced skiing being the Bellecôte glacier.

La Plagne has some seriously challenging off-piste, often without much hiking involved. Come and make tracks on the “Cul du Nant”, the “Friolin” and the “Mont de la Guerre”, not forgetting the “North Face of Bellecôte, the “Aiguille Rouge.”

Weather and snow conditions permitting, you can usually ski in La Plagne from December to April using the lift system.

La Plagne has a total of 135 pistes with 74 blue pistes, 34 red pistes, eight black pistes and nine green pistes.

The longest piste is the 7km Mont de la Guerre. 

Lifts are open daily from 09:00 to around 17:00 subject to weather conditions and strong winds. Timings for each individual lift can be found on the piste map.

Perhaps the largest ski area in the world, La Plagne unites 11 different villages, and really can offer ‘something for everyone’, offering more than 56,000 beds.

The busiest weeks in La Plagne always coincide with school holidays, around Christmas and the New Year and in mid-February. But careful planning can help you avoid the crowds. 

Because it remains popular with the French, many of whom own apartments on the slopes, prices remain reasonable and food standards high, with no shortage of the mountain diet essentials – good bread, croissants, cheese and cured meats.

Expect to pay between €6-€10 a pint, depending on the bar or restaurant and its location.

Whilst La Plagne is large and welcoming, it doesn’t have such a party reputation as other resorts. If you really want to find a party, there will undoubtedly be something going on! Check out Scotty’s bar in Plagne Centre, Le Cosy in Plagne Bellecote, Le Saloon, La Plagne’s closest answer to a club or Igloo Igloo in Plagne centre. 

Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup (4-10 December) is one for adrenaline junkies in the family. Christmas in La Plagne is a fairytale come to life, and La Plagne doesn’t hold back on New Year festivities either. P’tits Flambeaux torchlight descent (15 February) is a magical event every day. Para-Bobsleigh World Cup (19-23 March) La Plagne is proud to welcome back the legendary Grande Boucle in 2025. The Tour de France is back in force with two major events that will mark the summer.

The resort lays claim to being the world’s largest, offering more than 56,000 beds.  Accommodation, much of it purpose-built in the 1950s, is spread over 11 separate high-rise estates, scattered across the vast and gentle plateau it is named after. 

La Plagne is relatively easy to get to by car, but you don’t really need your car once you’re in the resort.

La Plagne is super easy to get around, with all of the free inter-village transport, from cable cars to loop bus services. And of course, feel free to ski into Les Arcs with the right ski pass. 

It takes around 10 hours to travel from Geneva to Aime, the nearest train station, by train, over a distance of around 83 km. There are normally 10 trains per day. From the train station, La Plagne is a 20km taxi, transfer or bus ride away.
