Route Details, Issues & Alternatives

The standard route from Geneva airport to Val-d’Isere will usually take you via Annecy (along Lake Annecy) and Albertville,  followed by an impressive 32km climb up the mountain road Bourg St Maurice. This direct route will take you past the Chevril dam and along the lake to arrive at the area known as La Daille - the gateway to the renowned ski resort of Val d'Isere.

An alternative route will take you via the motorway, heading towards Lyon / Albertville. This journey is longer and will incur motorway toll fees, though you could get to Val-d’Isere faster if the shorter route is heavily congested.

A third option would be to journey via Clusaz / Megeve. This is a much longer drive, so should only be used as an emergency if all other options are closed.


What to Do En-Route

During your Geneva to Val-d'Isere transfer, you don’t have to go straight to your final destination. If you want to stop at any stage of the trip to stretch your legs, we will happily accommodate this.

There are several supermarkets on your way to Val-d’Isere. You can buy some snacks for the journey and necessary ski holiday essentials before you get to the resort. Sometimes, products bought on the way to ski resort are cheaper than those found in the resort itself.

Keep your eyes peeled for the views around beautiful Lake Annecy. Annecy is a beautiful lakeside town on the road to the Alps between Geneva and Vald’Isere.

Geneva to Val-d’Isere Journey Altitude

It’s important to remember that getting to Val-d’Isere will take you to a very high altitude. This can present its own potential difficulties.

Geneva airport sits at 430m, the highest lift in Val-d’Isere has altitude of 3450m. This journey can present passengers with some mild discomfort. Nausea, headaches and dizziness can be symptoms of the change in air pressure. Young children are especially prone to feeling unwell.

When you combine this air pressure change with steep, serpentine roads, transfers to Val-d'Isere can be difficult for some. If needed, ask your driver to lower the temperature in the vehicle to help you feel more comfortable.

When feeling particularly unwell, the beautiful mountain scenery of Val-d’Isere can be the perfect medicine.

Val d’Isere is one of the highest traditional ski villages in Europe.
