Route Details, Issues & Alternatives

The standard route from Grenoble airport to Val-d’Isere will usually take you via direct route A43 motorway to Albertville via Grenoble, the N90 road to Bourg St.Maurice then the D1090 and D902 in the direction of the Rue de la Poste (Val d'isère).

An alternative route will take you thru Bourgoin-Jallieu/Chambery.  Please, always consider the traffic you will have to encounter during the weekend time between Moutiers and Bourg St.Maurice. Always ask the driver about the best possible route.  If there is bad weather or snow, just plan extra time for your transfer.

 

What to Do En-Route

You don’t necessarily have to go straight to your ski destination. If you wish to stop at any stage of the trip to stretch your legs, we will happily accommodate this.

There are several supermarkets on your way to Val-d’Isere. You can buy some snacks for the journey and necessary ski holiday essentials before you get to the resort. Products bought on the way to ski resort can be cheaper than those found in the resort stores.

As Val d'Isère is nestled in the mountains, you can enjoy magnificent views during your trip. Take your camera, get excited, and start snapping.

Journey Altitude

It’s important to know that your journey from Grenoble to Val-d’Isere ski resort will take you to a very high altitude. This can present its own potential difficulties.

Grenoble airport sits at almost 400m, the highest lift in Val-d’Isere has an altitude of 3450m. This journey can present some passengers with some mild discomfort. Nausea, headaches and dizziness can be symptoms of the change in air pressure. Young children are especially prone to feeling unwell.

When you combine this air pressure change with steep, serpentine roads, the journey sometimes can be difficult. If needed, ask your driver to lower the temperature in the vehicle to help you feel more comfortable.

Val-d’Isere ski resort is known as one of Europe’s highest altitude resorts (2500m), Val-d’Isere is situated in the hugely popular Espace Killy. Val d’Isere has something to offer for every skier, starting from free riders to the nursery slopes to some epic off-piste.

Val d’Isere is made up of three main areas, up the valley towards Italy is Le Fornet, ‘Val Village’ in the centre and La Daille is down the valley and is closest to Tignes. The village’s high altitude makes it easier for it to offer impressive snow cover all season long. Val d’Isere is one of the highest traditional ski villages in Europe.

Your ski pass will give you access to around 300km of downhill skiing, with 154 individual pistes, served by 87 ski lifts.
