Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein is a town in Salzburg, Austria. The town center is located at the Gastein Falls, about 1,000 meters above sea level. It is a historic resort a picturesque valley between the rocks. Bad Gastein known is not only known as a summer and winter recreational center, but since 19th century also recognized as a spa town. The name "Bad" means "spa", reflecting the town's history as a health resort, having thermal baths. Bad Gastein is Austria's largest ski area. It has more sophisticated après ski than many resorts and the world renowned skiing includes many delightful wooded trails.

Ski area

Austrian ski resort, Bad Gastein is part of the Gastein ski area, which includes 4 more resorts – Bad Hofgastein, Dorfgastein, Graukogel, and Sportgastein. In total, Gastein ski area has 205 km downhill pistes with 178 individual runs. Bad Gastein itself has 250km of piste ski runs with 25 pistes:

  • 12 black pistes;
  • 42 red pistes;
  • 18 blue pistes.

The slopes are well suited for intermediate skiers but beginners and pros alike will also find where to ski:

  • Beginners – the nursery slopes are next to the main gondola. From the nursery slopes, beginners can progress onto blue runs on the Stubnerkogel.
  • Intermediates – offers a wide variety of red and blue runs, linked with nearby Bad Hofgastein to make one large area.
  • Experts - There are also some testing runs on the Stubnerkogel and a couple of nice blacks on the Graukogel. The off-piste can be fantastic too.

Bad Gastein is not a typical boarding resort, but it still have plenty of terrains to attract snowboarders, particularly those from intermediate level up, with good natural terrain features. For cross country skiers there is 90 km long trail.

The attractive town of Bad Gastein has an excellent après ski and of course, the famous spas. Atmosphere here is very lively, good choice of cosmopolitan nightspots with impressive casinos, for those who would like to try their luck. Also, here is wide choice of good restaurants, they over 35 – for all tastes and pockets.

It is also recommended to visit Bad Gastein thermal waters, hidden within their mountains. People have been attracted here to bathe in these 'healing' waters for hundreds of years. This is such a relaxing process, just sit in a warm thermal pool while looking up at the snow-covered mountains.
