Route Details, Issues & Alternatives

Travelling to Zermatt it’s important to know that for environmental reasons, the resort completely prohibits the movement of motor vehicles. That’s why all cars must be parked in Tasch. So, we drive till Tash cable car. And from there you can reach the centre of the resort in 12 minutes by train.

The first route will lead you from Zurich to the south along Lake Lauerzersee through the cities of Brunnen/Brig to the ski resort.

Sometimes tourists can use an alternative route. It would be a journey from Zurich via Bern/ Fribour/Montreux to the city of Martigny. And then to the east through Sion. This is a much longer drive (more than 4 hours of way), so should only be used if other option is not available.

 

What to Do En-Route

You don’t have to go straight up to the point of your destination. If you or someone in your company wants to make a stop during the transfer – that’s ok.

We can easily make stop at any stage to stretch legs or just to breathe some fresh alpine air. Simple ask your driver to make this pause.

What to do also?

There are plenty of supermarkets en-route to Zermatt. So you can pick up your much-needed ski holiday essentials (and maybe a few snacks for the journey) before you get to the ski resort. Besides, some products bought on the way to Zermatt may cost cheaper than those in the resort itself.

Journey Altitude

It’s important to remember that your journey from Zurich to Zermatt will take you to a quite high altitude that may lead to some potential complications.

Zurich airport sits at 432m, Zermatt ski resort -  at 1620m. This trip can present problems for some passengers (mild discomfort, nausea, headaches and dizziness). All of these can be symptoms of the change in air pressure. Children are especially prone to feeling unwell during the trip through the mountains on steep, serpentine roads. So, don’t be shy to ask your driver to lower the temperature in the vehicle or make a stop, if needed, to help you feel more comfortable.
