Get to know Morillon Ski Resort

Centred around a 16th century church the traditional village of Morillon demonstrates just how long the farming community have thrived in the valley. The resort is slowly becoming a destination for skiers from other countries but today still exists as a popular French family resort where their children can develop their skills on the snow in safety. The local ski area in the valley has been designed with this in mind, offering numerous green and blue runs for beginners and kids to cut their teeth.

For those wanting to spread their wings head over to the recently installed Coulouvrier chairlift which gives access to plenty of interesting, tree-lined pistes above the village. There are easy links to the Grand Massif resorts farther afield, such as Morillon 1100 the highest sister of Morillon, purpose-built Flaine, Samoëns, Les Carroz with plenty of appealing tree-lined pistes and lastly historic Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval, which remains as a pretty and charming village with 12th century origins which has been mostly unaffected by tourism.

Skiing and activities in Morillon

With its easy links to the resorts of the Grand Massif, Morillon offers plenty of scope for beginners through to experts. From the easy runs lower down there is higher access to scenic tree-lined runs, faster reds and even a few challenging blacks and off-piste areas for when you’ve built your confidence. The variety really is the main appeal.

Accessing the higher runs couldn’t be easier by taking the cable car up to Morillon 1100, from where you have direct access to the other Grand Massif resorts. Morillon has invested heavily in snow making over recent years which as a lower resort helps to ensure it stays snow sure in warmer winters.

Morillon skiing: an overview

Located at a lower altitude than some of the other local resorts made Morillon a destination for French family daytrippers who could time their visits according to the snow coverage. Thankfully the installation of numerous snow cannons has extended Morillon to become a much more snow sure destination. The ski season tends to run from December through to April.

The runs around Morillon and Morillon 1100 are mostly greens and blues, although accessing the more challenging runs around Flaine and farther afield is straightforward. Reds, a few blacks and good off-piste variety is all within easy reach.

If fun parks are your thing then access to Flaine in the Grand Massif will see you richly rewarded. The HO5 Park by the Calcédoine piste in Flaine enables freestylers to choose between different levels of kickers, rails, and boxes. There are also three half pipes and to relax afterwards try the trail ‘Ze Forest’ with banked curves that lead through the forest.

Non-skiing activities in Morillon

If you have ever wanted to try your hand at ski touring then the quiet and calm around the valleys near Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval and Samoëns will make for a memorable day. Join a guided group tour for those aged 12+ where you can take time to take in the spectacular scenery away from the buzz of the busy pistes.

If you want to stay closer to home snowshoe rental will allow you to make tracks in the valley or higher up if you’re feeling energetic. Morillon even has a village ice-skating rink for you to practice your moves, while several sledging slopes allow children to safely enjoy the thrills and spills on the snow.

Organised by the local tourist office Morillon promotes a dedicated winter season of activities for tourists. These include sled races, concerts and ski-joring, which involves standing on skis and being towed by a horse, what could possibly go wrong?
